It is still undecided/unknown how this will affect the election result announcement. There are currently (20.45 GMT+2) people gathered at Exarcheia square, chanting anti-election slogans.

Vandals slash tires on 20 vehicles — Fort Dodge, IA

Vandals targeted 20 Fort Dodge vehicles by slashing their tires, and police want to find out who did it.

The damage was discovered Wednesday morning by a Fort Dodge police officer on routine patrol, Assistant Police Chief Kevin Doty said.

“One of our cruisers noticed a couple of cars that had their tires slashed,” he said. “The officer looked in the area to see if there were more cars targeted. Then people coming out of their homes going to work discovered their tires were flattened.”

In all, owners reported 20 vehicles had tires slashed. Doty said some of the cars had only one tire slashed, and others had multiple flattened tires.

“All of the cars were on the street,” Doty said. “Some of the tires were on the street side, and others were on the curb side.”

The vandalism happened in a roughly 10-block area between Second Avenue South and 12th Avenue South, and South 17th Street and South 27th Street. Investigators believe the crime happened either late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

Police also received reports of tires being damaged in other parts of town, and are investigating whether or not the same suspect or suspects are involved. Police don’t know the dollar amount of damage caused, but Doty estimated it would be costly.

“Even if you can replace the tire for $100, that’s still going to be a pinch on the owner,” he said.

The police are hoping the case will be solved quickly.

“It’s a pretty senseless crime,” Doty said. “It’s causing these people so much of an inconvenience.”

Two arrested for allegedly setting fires at Muni station — San Francisco, CA

Two were arrested on suspicion of arson in San Francisco for fires set at the Castro Muni station early Wednesday morning, police said.

Police were called to the station at around 4 a.m. today. The station was not in service when the fires were set, and there was no disruptions to service during the morning rush hour.

Arson investigators continue to investigate the case.

Striking coal miners fight police with homemade rockets — El Soton, Spain

Striking coal miners armed with homemade rockets and slingshots clashed with police in northern Spain on Friday, leaving seven people injured, two of them seriously, the Interior Ministry said.

The strike is the latest and the most violent of many in Spain in reaction to harsh austerity measures aimed at digging the debt-burdened country out of its financial crisis.

The miners are concerned that government cuts — including a reduction in mining subsidies from €300 million to €110 million ($375 million-$137 million) a year — will devastate their industry.

Spain is applying across-the-board cutbacks as part of an economic overhaul aimed at slashing its swollen deficit, but that plan comes at a time when the country’s unemployment rate is nearly 25 percent.

Four police officers and three journalists were injured when police tried to remove roadblocks of flaming tires set up as part of the protest, and were met with a barrage of missiles fired by the miners, the regional office of the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Police responded with rubber bullets and tear gas.

A journalist was taken to the hospital with a chest injury caused by a rubber bullet, and a policeman received medical treatment after a ball bearing smashed through his visor.

Three other policemen were treated for burns caused by skyrocket fireworks fired through lengths of pipe held shoulder high, and two journalists suffered minor cuts and bruises, the statement said.

“We were protesting to defend our jobs and police charged at us, so my colleagues defended themselves,” said Gerardo Cienfuegos, 39, who said he has been a coal miner since he was 16 years old.

Cienfuegos said around 4,000 mining jobs in the region were in danger of disappearing as a result of the government’s austerity measures.

Mining has been an integral part of the economy of the northern provinces of Asturias and Leon since Romans discovered gold and coal there nearly 2,000 years ago.

Several thousand miners clashed with police in Madrid early in June as they marched to complain that stripping government aid would doom their sector to collapse.

Police baton-charged one group that was throwing stones and bottles, arresting two people and nine were slightly hurt.

Vandal smashes up luxury cars at dealership — Deerfield Beach, FL

Authorities are searching for a vandal who targeted a luxury car dealership.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies said the suspect caused $20,000 worth of damage to the five high-end cars at Domani Motors, along Dixie Highway and Southwest 10th Street.

Police released surveillance video which showed a man in jeans and no shirt throwing rock after rock and smashing the windshields of a black Jaguar, a Lotus and three Bentleys.

Demonstrators clash with police during screening of pro-Pinochet film — Santiago, Chile

Hundreds of Chilean demonstrators have clashed with the police after the screening of a documentary praising the former military government of General Augusto Pinochet.

Pablo Zalaquett, mayor of the capital, Santiago, said police were attacked in several areas of the city centre and there was extensive damage to property.

Police used tear gas and water cannon to break up the demonstration.

Gen Pinochet came to power in a coup in 1973, ruling until 1990.

The film’s screening has pitted supporters of the late general, who claim the right to free speech, against relatives of victims of his regime, who are outraged at the tone of the documentary.

The mayor said hundreds of anti-Pinochet demonstrators organised in groups continued to launch “coordinated attacks” in the centre of Santiago hours after the screening at the Caupolican theatre.

“As I said before, I would prefer the event not to have taken place because we all knew what was going to happen,” Mr Zalaquett told CNN.

“Chile needs to look forward. We are tired. Many people say they are out there to defend human rights, but they just come to destroy and loot.”

Gen Pinochet led a coup against the democratically-elected Marxist president of Chile, Salvador Allende, on 11 September 1973 and only left power in 1990.

The Chilean government estimates that more than 3,000 people were killed during the Pinochet years, included those whose bodies have not been found.

Thousands more were tortured, arrested or forced into exile during his rule.

Divisive heritage

Relatives of victims say the documentary, “Pinochet”, is insensitive and glorifies the general’s brutal regime.

The organisers say it aims to show Gen Pinochet as he really was, and not as the media portrayed him - as a ruthless dictator.

The event became one of the biggest pro-Pinochet gatherings since he died in 2006.

Thousands of Pinochet supporters turned up for the screening, including right-wing politicians and former members of the Chilean military.

The general’s grandson, Augusto Pinochet Molina, was present at the theatre.

“This is not just an homage to my grandfather, I believe it is an homage to the entire military junta. My grandfather was the leader of this government but I tell you, it wasn’t just his work.”

The controversy shows how divisive Gen Pinochet remains, nearly four decades after the coup that brought him to power, says the BBC’s Gideon Long in Santiago.

For some he was a hero who saved Chile from communism, but for others he was as brutal murderer who should be reviled, not applauded, our correspondent says.

Roughly a decade after the fervent period of Earth Liberation activity that occurred in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, we find ourselves in a far more hopeless situation, immersed in an ever-deepening desert.

Some cling to the idea of hope and others view this as nothing more than a deceitful delusion. Neither narrative concerns us. What truly concerns us is that the living world around us is dying, and that the strength of our heart atrophies through inaction.

Anarchists fight police during demonstration — Seattle, WA

Seattle police say that nearly 50 protesters, dressed in black and bandanas, attacked officers with lit road flares and eggs during a demonstration on Capitol Hill last night.

Police spokesman Mark Jamieson said the group was protesting the detention of some political prisoners, it’s unclear who or where. Protesters chanted anti-police slogans and carried signs, including one that read “all cops are bastards,” Jamieson said.

Officers said the confrontation with protesters began around 10:10 p.m. when one squad car traveling on East Olive Way, toward Broadway, was surrounded. The protesters, many with bandanas covering their faces, threw road flares and eggs at the patrol car, police said.

“Rather than engage the hostile crowd by himself, the officer turned down an alley and called for additional officers,” police said in a news release.

Soon another lit flare was thrown at the initial officer; protesters also pushed newspaper boxes into the street, police said. When additional officers showed up, “the protesters all took off running in different directions,” the news release said.

No arrests were made.

Vandals smash deputy’s window as he drives — Kent, WA

According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, a K-9 Deputy driving near Kent last night was “startled” when vandals threw a sizeable rock at his cruiser - which bounced off the hood and smashed the windshield in front of him.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 10:20 p.m. last night. Luckily, the driving officer wasn’t hurt - just surprised, and ultimately covered in glass. Police also report finding several “staged” rocks (pictured below) on the side of the road - apparently ready to throw.

According to police, during a similar incident, involving a citizen rather than a cop, Kent Police received reports of three juveniles running from the area. There’s been no official word as to whether to two occurrences are related, however.

Deputy gunned down while serving eviction notice — Modesto, CA

Deputy Robert “Bob” Paris volunteered to work for the sheriff’s civil division, which included serving eviction notices throughout Stanislaus County. A dangerous but necessary job.

“He loved it,” said Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson. “He put in for it. He was chosen.”

For nearly 16 years, the sheriff said Paris served the department with dedication, working several jobs from patrol deputy to the sheriff’s water enforcement team. His life ended Thursday at age 53 after he was gunned down while serving an eviction notice at a north Modesto apartment.

Authorities had not released the identity of the second person killed. The name will be released pending proper family notification.

String of smash n’ grabs at AT&T stores — Susquehanna Valley, PA

Police in the Susquehanna Valley area are investigating several smash and grabs that happened at AT&T stores this week.

Apparently, the burglars used rocks to smash in glass doors and they moved quickly.

An AT&T store at the Shoppes of Susquehanna is just one of several where the burglars used rocks to break in. Police say they looked like pros, in and out in less than one minute.

Police say the burglars broke into AT&T stores in Carlisle, Camp Hill, Harrisburg, Susquehanna Township even Allentown and Bethlehem.

“We know it was four individuals wearing hoodies and we believe they also used burgundy colored van, a mini van,” stated Carlisle Police Chief Stephen Margeson.

Carlisle Police Chief Stephen Margeson says the thieves took off with demo phones and accessories. He believes that the thefts are all related.

“It’s logical to assume that they’re related,” Margeson added. “The same people or some of the same people were involved.”

He’s working with different law enforcement agencies to catch them.

“Our detective who is handling that will make sure that we reach out and talk to some other agencies,” Margeson commented.

Wal-Mart evacuated after fire deliberately set inside — London, Ontario, Canada

Shoppers inside a Wal-Mart store in St. Thomas were forced to evacuate late Sunday morning due to a fire, which police say they believe was deliberately set.

A patrol officer noticed smoke coming from the area behind the Wal Mart on Talbot St., about 11:30 am Sunday morning and quickly alerted the fire department, police said.

The fire was started along the rear exterior wall and flames spread through the wall and into a storage area, filling the entire store with smoke.

All of the customers and staff were evacuated. One woman was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, but there were no serious injuries.

Police said the products sitting in the Wal Mart storage area suffered smoke, fire and water damage. The total cost of the damage remains unknown.

St. Thomas police and the Ontario Fire Marshals Office are investigating.

Thieves steal thousands of dollars worth of copper from energy company — Wichita, KS

Thieves broke into a Westar Energy warehouse in the 4400 block of North Seneca and took thousands of dollars worth of copper.

The theft was discovered shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday when Westar employees noticed someone had cut a chain-link fence surrounding the property in several locations, according to Sgt. Bart Brunscheen, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department. Once inside the warehouse, the thieves used a skid loader to steal the copper. The loader was later found outside the property in an abandoned field.

Because the Wichita Police Department has had several metal thefts reported recently, Brunscheen said police are encouraging area residents to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity and to call 911 to report it.

Anonymous takes down Chicago police websites — Internet

A group associated with the hacker community Anonymous claims to have taken down Chicago’s police department website, and authorities are investigating whether the city of Chicago website was hit as well.

As of about 11:10 a.m., the Chicago Police Department website, cityofchicago.org/police, was down along with Chicago’s city website, cityofcity.org. The sites were back up just before 1 p.m.

Chicago Police News Affairs said they weren’t aware the sites weren’t working as usual, but Supt. Garry McCarthy confirmed to reporters at noon the sites were indeed down.

Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management site, hosted on the city of Chicago site, also would not load and shortly after also went down.

In the video statement posted online, the group AntiS3curityOPS claimed they are “actively engaged in actions against the Chicago Police Department.”

Officials say they continue to investigate.
